New Orleans Sketch Paper Art

PLANNING

PAPER | Canson acid-free white paper is my medium of choice, as it allows for maximum depth and shadow play on the thin paper.

DESIGN | My work mainly focuses on geometric designs highlighting architecture, interiors, city views, and patterns. I am drawn to the orderly structure built upon the repetition of shapes.

SKETCH | All pieces start with a photo, design, or idea digitally planned. The initial plan is transferred and edited by hand to the back side of the paper.

CUTTING

TOOLS | Scotch Precision Utility Knife, X-Acto Knives, Alvin Cutting Mat, Alvin Dry Cleaning Pad, Woodless Graphite Pencils, Dusting Brush

CUTS | Working on the back side of the paper, I typically cut left to right starting at the corners. My cutting hand (right) typically rests on scrap paper to avoid smudging the template. I methodically remove bits of paper and brush off my design as I work. While the sketching portion can be tedious, cutting paper is often meditative for me.

CLEAN UP

REPAIRS | Once cutting is complete, I scan the piece for any jagged edges or corners that may need extra care. The work is flipped and I clean up any smudges or spots on the face of the work. One final brush for ay last bits of dust and I add my signature to the bottom corner.

FRAMING | Stay tuned for a best practice framing guide.
